Climate Change

Fremantle is the Canary on the Coastline

Returning from a recent visit to California to Fremantle’s sweltering summer temperatures in autumn, newly re-elected Greens MLC Lynn MacLaren recounted  reports in the USA media that named Australia the “canary in the coal mine” in terms of experiencing impacts of climate change.

“The Climate Commission reported that this past summer was the hottest on record and included the hottest sea-surface temperatures ever,” Ms MacLaren said today.

Rockingham ahead of the game on climate change

With higher than expected sea water temperatures and faster than predicted sea level rise, the Greens say WA needs to follow the example set by Rockingham on climate change.

Greens spokesperson on planning, Lynn MacLaren MLC, said Rockingham’s showing the way and the rest of Western Australia can’t afford a piecemeal approach any longer.

“The City of Rockingham is well beyond debating what may be causing climate change,” Ms MacLaren said today. “They have studied the science and intend to be ready.

Life at Jervoise Bay and Woodman Point to Change in New Climate

Greens MLC Lynn MacLaren revealed today the impacts climate change is having on Cockburn, and called for state government action to relieve pressure on local council efforts to adapt to climate change.

“Modest predictions see the coastal facilities along Jervoise Bay and Woodman Point under water by 2100. In just the moderate projections released by Australian Department of Climate Change and Energy Efficiency, the spits, groynes and jetties that are currently used in this area in particular are going to disappear by 2100. This is based on a 0.8 metre rise in sea level.

I move that the Bill now be read a second time.

Firstly Mr President, pursuant to standing order 126(1), I advise that this bill is not a uniform legislation bill. Coastal Care Needs More Than Patchwork

Lynn MacLaren MLC, Greens spokesperson on Planning, said the recent tripling of coastal protection grant funding points to a growing problem which is not easily addressed by short term projects. “The coast care grants play an important role in protecting the coast, but I question this Government’s patchwork approach.”

“The waves of climate change are going to continue rolling in over our shores. Erosion protection at Emu Point and Monitoring in Mandurah are the tip of iceberg. This is why I am introducing the Climate Change Readiness (Coastal Planning and Protection) Bill 2012. Read more »
