Government’s State Heritage Policy short on detail

Hon. Lynn MacLaren MLC, the Greens spokesperson for Heritage said the Minister’s announcement of a state cultural heritage policy was short on detail, apart from the permanent listing of Government House on the State Heritage Register. However, Ms MacLaren welcomed the announcement of a review of the Heritage Act and is encouraging Western Australians to make submissions.

“Natural, cultural and aboriginal heritage have thus far been poorly recognised and inadequately protected," said Ms MacLaren.

"For example, the inadequate heritage protection around the new Perth waterfront development may put at risk important cultural places like the Supreme Court Gardens and the Florence Hummerston building.”

“I know that communities are passionate about preserving cultural heritage and this is an opportunity to influence government action to protect heritage values. One thing that I will be urging in my submission is that the Government protects the Burrup and the amazing ancient rock art that exists there,” concluded Ms MacLaren.

A copy of the consultation paper on the review of the Act is available here or by phoning 9221 4177. Submissions close 10th June 2011.
