Greens member calls for more funding and attention for Swan River

27th September 2013

Media statement, Friday, 27 September, 2013.

Greens MLC Lynn MacLaren believes the Barnett Government is further evading its responsibilities to protect the degrading Swan River with the axing of the Swan River Trust – an independent body that managed the river system.

Our latest alarming news is that the Department has been told NOT to appeal EPA decisions. These decisions may well not reflect the advice given by the Department, yet its right to challenge a decision has been denied.

“The Barnett Government keeps dumping its environmental responsibilities. It has axed funding for conservation groups, volunteer projects, and now the Swan River Trust is being swallowed up into the Department for Parks and Wildlife.”

“It seems anything environmentally related is being squeezed or scrapped by the Government at a time when our environment is under increasing threat”.

With no independent authority, Ms MacLaren emphasised we have to question whether appropriate action will be taken challenging government decisions regarding the river in the future.

“Our beautiful Swan River is at crisis point, we have rock bottom oxygen levels in certain areas, algae blooms and reports of dolphin deaths, we need to be investing time and money into this, not scaling it back”.
