Same Sex Marriage Bill 2013

It is not often that one has an opportunity to make the world a better place; tabling this bill, which sets out the legislative framework for same-sex marriages, is one of those major milestones in the long journey for social justice and equality.

The purpose of this Bill is to provide for -

  • same-sex marriages between adults;
  • authorisation of celebrants to solemnise same-sex marriages;
  • amendments to the Births, Deaths and Marriages Registration Act 1998 to provide for the registration of same-sex marriages;
  • amendments to the Family Court Act 1997 to provide for the dissolution and annulment of same-sex marriages and for related financial matters;
  • consequential amendments to other Acts; and
  • related purposes.

In 2011, I made a member’s statement expressing my support for marriage equality and urging all Western Australians to call upon the Parliament of the Commonwealth of Australia to amend the commonwealth Marriage Act 1961 to provide for marriage equality.

On the 12 December 2013, I introduced this Bill into the Legislation Council and gave my second reading speech
