Question

(1) Since 2012, how many injuries to greyhounds has resulted in euthanasia at the track or subsequent to a race?
(2) On average, since 2012, what percentage of retired greyhounds are:
(a) re-homed by the Western Australian Racing Association;
(b) re-homed by other organisations; and
(c) euthanised?

As the WA Racing Data Base has only been maintained by Racing and Wagering Western Australia (RWWA) since 1 August 2013, RWWA cannot access reliable information prior to that date from the National Data Repository.

(1) From 1 August 2013 to 31 July 2015 67 greyhounds out of 55,341 starters.

(2) (a) 12.5 per cent are rehomed through the Greyhounds As Pets (GAP) Program run by RWWA. This program was formerly run by the Western Australian Greyhound Racing Association.

(b) 13.4 per cent rehomed and 26.4 per cent retired as pets directly by owners/trainers or to third parties, or retained for breeding.

(c) 43.5 per cent euthanised due, for example, to injury/illness or not suitable for rehoming, and 4.2 per cent died of natural causes.
