Magellan lead scandal - new questions over 4 month wait for results

The Greens have today unearthed the latest development in the Magellan lead scandal – evidence of disturbing lead levels in the company’s own monitoring data, which are taking unreasonable lengths of time to analyse.

The party has been scouring the company’s monitoring results since the scandal blew up just days ago.

"Magellan’s own monitoring data reveals disturbing lead levels in three of its fifteen drainage sump sites – which are locations at the Fremantle Port used to indicate whether lead has escaped the shipping containers,” said Fremantle-based South Metropolitan MLC Lynn MacLaren.

Greens say export of lead carbonate must stop

In response to new evidence that lead dust has been found outside the double bags bound for export at Fremantle, the WA Greens have called on the Barnett Government to uphold its promises and shut down the transportation of lead carbonate from Magellan’s Wiluna mine.

Fremantle-based Greens MLC Lynn MacLaren made the call after quoting former Environment Minister Donna Faragher, who stated in May 2010 that she would "not hesitate to shut it down should lead be traced back to Magellan ever be found in the environment.”

2011 could be a happy new year on the climate front

"Earlier this month while travelling in California and Oregon in the US, I noted a positive increase in energy efficient housing, hybrid and electric vehicles, marketing organic foods and wines and even organic cotton clothing," said Greens MLC Lynn MacLaren.

“If the USA can take these progressive steps in their sour economic climate, then surely our booming WA economy can take great strides forward in 2011,” added Ms MacLaren.

Audit report damns Indigenous home ownership program -Greens

The Australian National Audit Office (ANAO) has released a damning report on the ill-conceived Home Ownership on Indigenous Land (HOIL) program.

"The report indicates that the four year, $107.4 million* program (of which $49.2m has been spent to date) resulted in only 15 Indigenous families taking out home loans through the program - significantly less than the 460 loan target of the program," said Senator Rachel Siewert, Greens spokesperson on Aboriginal Issues.
