Greens table petition against canal developments

Greens MLC Lynn MacLaren has today tabled hundreds of signatures on a petition that challenges the development of two proposed canal estate developments at Point Peron and Ocean Reef.

The petition challenges the promotion of both developments as ‘marinas’, and calls for a ban on canal estate developments, as seen in New South Wales and Victoria. Read more »

Canal development will harm Penguin Island penguins

Greens South Metropolitan MLC Lynn MacLaren has slammed the Federal Government’s approval today of Cedar Woods’  large canal proposal on precious public land at Point Peron in Rockingham. 

“The planned 500-pen marina will damage seagrass beds that are not easily replaced, eliminate habitat and food sources and expose penguins to injury from boat strikes,” Ms MacLaren said. 

“The Penguin Island Little Penguin breeding population is now half what it was in 2007, with starvation the leading cause.

“The marina proposal is smack bang in the middle of these animals’ feeding and foraging ground, as well as an important fish nursery which supplies their food.  Read more »

Community still in the dark about Cedar Woods profit from public land grab: Greens

Greens MLC Lynn MacLaren has demanded that the State Government reveal how much Cedar Woods – a private property development company – will profit from the public land grab of Point Peron for the development of Mangles Bay Marina.
 
The land was transferred by the Commonwealth to the State of Western Australia on condition that the future use of the land would be restricted to recreation and parklands.  Read more »

Community Protests Mangles Bay Marina and Canal Development

Greens MLC Lynn MacLaren will join protesters today outside developer Cedar Woods' office in West Perth saying "the proposed canal estate and marina near Point Peron is short-sighted."
 
"The environment loses, and the community loses, by privatising this key coastal area.

"For generations the Point Peron area has been accessible by anyone wishing to enjoy its natural amenity. If the Mangles Bay marina goes ahead, private housing on canals to be carved out of the land will cover half of this area. Read more »
