Director-General’s actions deepen doubts over Department of Fisheries role

Media statement, Thursday 15 May 2014.

Greens MLC Lynn MacLaren has expressed concern about actions of the WA Department of Fisheries Director-General on board a Fisheries drum lining vessel in March, when he was supposed to be on the boat as an official observer.

“Video footage of the Director General’s actions reveals he played an active role, even handling a shark caught on a drum line.

“According to the Department of Premier and Cabinet’s referral document currently undergoing environment assessment, a ‘Fisheries officer’ conducted an ‘observer trip’ on a drumlining vessel on Thursday 20 March 2014 off Perth – one of several observer trips done to ensure that drumlining operations were conducted legally,” Ms MacLaren said. Drum line ‘success’ exposed as furphy

Media statement, Tuesday 13 May 2014.

A claim by the WA Fisheries Minister last week that the drum lines were a success because there had been fewer beach closures this summer compared to last year have been exposed as furphy after the Greens confirmed that WA’s beach closure policy was changed in January.

“Before the drum lines went in this summer, a two metre or bigger shark needed only to come within one kilometre of the shoreline for a beach closure to occur, but in January, Surf Life Saving WA changed its policy so that a shark up three metres in length could come within 500 metres of the shore before the beach was closed,” Ms MacLaren said. Why Blame the Tiger Shark?

From Jan 25th to April 30th 2014, drum lines have claimed the lives of 64 tiger sharks off Perth metropolitan beaches and the southwest coast – although given the poor condition of many undersized tiger sharks officially ‘released alive’, the real figure may be closer to 100.

The Greens have relied on the best up-to-date scientific data to assess the danger that tiger sharks pose in Western Australian waters. Any animal can be dangerous (in fact, mosquitoes have killed millions of people) but the risk posed by tiger sharks has been overstated by the current Barnett Government.
