I move that the Bill now be read a second time.

Firstly Mr President, pursuant to standing order 126(1), I advise that this bill is not a uniform legislation bill. It does not ratify or give effect to an intergovernmental or multilateral agreement to which the government of the state is a party; nor does this bill, by reason of its subject matter, introduce a uniform scheme or uniform laws throughout the commonwealth.

Greens Bill Plugs the Climate Change Gap

As emergency service workers mop up after the most recent storm damage the Greens WA are today releasing a comprehensive strategy to mitigate the impact of climate change on coastal communities.

Greens spokesperson on planning Lynn MacLaren said the strategy would plug obvious gaps in the state’s current planning legislation.

“No-one wants their house foundations washing out to sea,” Ms MacLaren said.

Coastal Care Needs More Than Patchwork

Lynn MacLaren MLC, Greens spokesperson on Planning, said the recent tripling of coastal protection grant funding points to a growing problem which is not easily addressed by short term projects. “The coast care grants play an important role in protecting the coast, but I question this Government’s patchwork approach.”

Greens call for urgent action to protect our coastline against climate change

Hon Lynn MacLaren MLC, the Greens spokesperson on planning, moved a motion in Parliament today calling upon the WA Government to urgently update its planning rules for the West Australian coast to take account of the projected impacts of climate change.

The call follows the release by the Antarctic Climate Centre this week of more than 40 peer reviewed publications showing that the Southern Ocean is heating faster than other major oceans. Read more »
