Small victory in Parliament for man’s best friend

Media statement, Monday, 28 October, 2013.

After hours of debate, the Government agreed to amend the Dog Act to relax restrictions on the transfer of ownership of a Pit-bull.

Greens MLC Lynn MacLaren, who argued vigorously against breed specific legislation, welcomed the amendments. “The Government proposed that if the owner of a restricted breed, for a completely unforseen reason, could no longer look after their Pit-bull or Pit-bull cross breed, they were not entitled to transfer the ownership to someone that is capable”.

“Under what might be testing circumstances, the added stress of getting rid of a pet that the owner may have had for some years is what we wish to avoid. We do not want to punish owners who can no longer look after their pet for extraordinary reasons that are out of their control”.

Tougher dog rules challenged by Greens MLC

Media statement, Wednesday, 23 October, 2013.

After a tough debate on amendments to the new Dog Act, the Government postponed debate on a potential change which would permit a dog to be rehomed instead of put down if an owners’ circumstances changed.

Greens MLC Lynn MacLaren put three amendments that would have given certain Pit-bulls and Pit-bull cross dogs a chance at leading a regular existence. All amendments were defeated.

“My amendment would have meant that Pit-bulls remained as a restricted breed but individual dogs did not have to be shoved in the dangerous dog category once they completed a prescribed training programme”.
