After hours of debate, the Government agreed to amend the Dog Act to relax restrictions on the transfer of ownership of a Pit-bull.
Greens MLC Lynn MacLaren, who argued vigorously against breed specific legislation, welcomed the amendments. “The Government proposed that if the owner of a restricted breed, for a completely unforseen reason, could no longer look after their Pit-bull or Pit-bull cross breed, they were not entitled to transfer the ownership to someone that is capable”.
“Under what might be testing circumstances, the added stress of getting rid of a pet that the owner may have had for some years is what we wish to avoid. We do not want to punish owners who can no longer look after their pet for extraordinary reasons that are out of their control”.
