THE GREAT COCKY COUNT 2012

Hon Lynn Maclaren MLC joined scores of volunteers across WA in the Great Cocky Count on Sunday 15 April.  The Great Cocky Count is a process where volunteers go to registered night-time roosting sites and count all the white-tailed cockatoos flying into roost in those trees. Ms Maclaren scanned the skies at sunset in Kensington near the Kent Street High School oval on the corner of Kennard and Rathay Streets.

Greens Congratulate Fremantle end live export protestors

Campaigners who locked themselves to a gate and ship today at Fremantle Port are to be congratulated for highlighting cruelty concerns associated with the live export of Australian sheep and cattle, says Greens Senator and animal welfare spokesperson Lee Rhiannon.

“Animal activists are understandably keen to gather evidence to publicly highlight the plight of sheep being exported. They filmed sheep heavily pregnant and with broken legs on the ship,” Senator Rhiannon said.

Consumers duped by free-range claims

The Minister for Agriculture confirmed today that eggs from farms with stocking densities exceeding 1500 per hectare are currently marketed in Western Australia as “free range.”

Greens Spokesperson for animals, Lynn MacLaren MLC said “I was appalled to learn that the Minister will not oppose the move by the Australian Egg Corporation Limited (AECL) to institute a legally binding definition of “free range” in relation to laying hens to include a maximum stocking density of 20,000 birds per hectare.” Read more »

No third chance for live exports

Greens Spokesperson for Animals, Lynn MacLaren MLC today called on the State Minister for Agriculture to immediately restore the capacity of abattoirs in the north as the call to end live exports is repeated around Australia.
