World Farm Animals Day

Greens MP Lynn MacLaren will call for more humane laws governing factory farming at a rally to mark the world event to end animal cruelty this Saturday at 1pm on the Fremantle Esplanade. Other speakers include Fremantle Mayor Brad Pettitt, Stop Live Exports’ Sandie Rawnsley, and Maylands MP Lisa Baker (ALP).

"Recently Australian's reacted strongly to evidence of cruelty in live exports.  Here is a chance to show we wouldn't want pigs, chickens, or other farm animals, suffering either" said Ms MacLaren.

Liberal Senator should retract live export claims - Greens

The Australian Greens have called for a full retraction from Liberal Senator Chris Back over his allegations that workers at Indonesian abattoirs were paid to mistreat Australian Cattle.
Senator Back made the comments in a Senate Inquiry hearing into welfare standards in Australia's live exports market.

Greens join protest as sheep shipment reaches Fremantle

Greens WA MLC and animal welfare spokesperson Lynn MacLaren will rally protestors at Victoria Quay in Fremantle at 11am this morning to protest against live exports as the MV Al Shuwaikh arrives enroute to Qatar. At least 50,000 sheep are on board which were originally offloaded from the crippled Al Messilah in Adelaide.

Fremantle is their last Australian port of call before suffering a three week haul to the Middle East. Read more »

Tomorrow, the Al Shuwaikh will arrive in Fremantle, carrying 50,000 animals that languished in Port Adelaide on a broken down ship for 2 weeks. If you're free, and can make it to Fremantle tomorrow, please join Lynn, Stop Live Exports, and caring locals at Victoria Quay (in front of E Shed) at 11am for a protest to shine the spotlight once again on this cruel trade.

Port Adelaide sheep should be processed in Australia

Greens Senator and animal welfare spokesperson Lee Rhiannon has called for sheep, due to be reloaded today onto a new vessel at Port Adelaide, to be processed in Australia not sent onto Kuwait. She congratulated those gathering at Port Adelaide to protest the trade.

"The 67,000 sheep have already experienced harsh conditions due to bungling and mechanical failure on the Al Messilah converted car carrier. They should not have to endure more suffering on the almost three week journey to the Middle East," Senator Rhiannon said. Read more »

Help stop slaughter cruelty

When Labor MPs are next in Canberra they will vote on a proposal that would mean all animals exported live will need to be stunned before slaughter. This is a legal requirement in Australia because our law recognises that un-stunned slaughter of animals is cruel. If this trade is going to continue for now, the most basic protection we can afford Australian animals is to not feel the pain and distress of dying.
