A Greens view on Heritage

Lynn MacLaren, WA Greens spokesperson on heritage issues, sent her submission regarding the review of the Heritage of Western Australia Act to the Heritage Council on 10 June 2011. It reflects the views of a cross section of people in Western Australia who are passionate about heritage.

 The deadline for submissions has been extended to the end of the month. Details regarding how to make a submission are available on the Heritage Council's website.

Brighton site demolition underway - Brown

Greens Leader Bob Brown visited the contentious Brighton Bypass Aboriginal site this morning north of Hobart.

"A large swathe of earth has been removed 40m square or more and half a metre deep with no archaeological or heritage officer on site," Senator Brown said.

Government’s State Heritage Policy short on detail

Hon. Lynn MacLaren MLC, the Greens spokesperson for Heritage said the Minister’s announcement of a state cultural heritage policy was short on detail, apart from the permanent listing of Government House on the State Heritage Register. However, Ms MacLaren welcomed the announcement of a review of the Heritage Act and is encouraging Western Australians to make submissions.

“Natural, cultural and aboriginal heritage have thus far been poorly recognised and inadequately protected," said Ms MacLaren.

Fremantle cleans up at the State Heritage Awards

The Greens spokesperson for Heritage, Fremantle based MP Lynn MacLaren, has congratulated the many groups working hard to maintain and develop Fremantle’s heritage, after Fremantle groups and businesses won a total of four awards at last night’s State Heritage Awards.

“Fremantle heritage is highly valued so it’s great that these groups are awarded this recognition,” said Ms MacLaren. Read more »

Greens welcome heftier penalties to protect WA’s heritage

The Greens in State Parliament supported increased penalties of up to $1million for illegal demolition and unauthorised development of heritage-listed properties in Western Australia and welcome today’s announcement by the Government.
