Environmental impacts of Perth Waterfront Project should be properly assessed

Hon Lynn MacLaren MLC, the Greens spokesperson on planning, has criticised the decision by the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) today not to assess the Perth Waterfront proposal.

“A project of such significance and scale along the city’s waterfront should be properly assessed for any potential environmental impacts by the EPA,” said Ms MacLaren.

“This is a unique opportunity to reshape the city-river connection. Perth deserves a firm commitment to deliver public infrastructure and a proper environmental assessment.” Read more »

Trees are felled along Manning Road in WilsonGreens MLC Lynn MacLaren responded to news of an injured protestor in the ongoing Manning Road tree felling conflict by calling on the Minister for Local Government to take a leadership role.

“These trees along the central median strip have all but disappeared now. The amenity of the area is dramatically affected.”

“This is a loss for the biodiversity for the city, for the people who live and work along Manning Road, and a failure in leadership by local and State authorities.”

Ministers must act to save Manning Road gums: Greens

South Metropolitan Greens MLC Lynn MacLaren has urged federal and state environment ministers to intervene with the felling of trees along Manning Road.

Ms MacLaren made the appeal in the hours before conservation activists took direct action to stop the chainsaws.  

“I urge you to find a way to stop the trees’ removal at least long enough for officers to review the plans and reports and determine whether or not the loss of these trees will impact on the Red Tailed Black Cockatoo,” wrote Ms MacLaren in an 11th hour bid to avoid the conflict. Read more »

Greens welcome Margaret River coal mine rejection

Hon Lynn MacLaren MLC, Greens spokesperson for planning, has welcomed the wonderful news that coal mining in the Margaret River region has been rejected by the WA Environment Minister.

Environment Minister Bill Marmion announced today that he upheld the Environmental Protection Authority’s (EPA) decision to reject Vasse Coal Management Pty Ltd’s proposal to develop a coal mine north-east of Margaret River. Read more »

EPA underestimates climate change impacts on proposed marina

The Hon Lynn MacLaren MLC, Greens spokesperson for planning, has appealed a decision by the Environmental Protection Authority to approve the construction of a marina and associated navigation channel at Point Grey in the Harvey estuary, arguing that the Government has not properly considered the impacts of climate change on the proposal and that the proposal should be rejected. Greens call for urgent action to protect our coastline against climate change

Hon Lynn MacLaren MLC, the Greens spokesperson on planning, moved a motion in Parliament today calling upon the WA Government to urgently update its planning rules for the West Australian coast to take account of the projected impacts of climate change.

The call follows the release by the Antarctic Climate Centre this week of more than 40 peer reviewed publications showing that the Southern Ocean is heating faster than other major oceans. Read more »
