Rockingham ahead of the game on climate change

With higher than expected sea water temperatures and faster than predicted sea level rise, the Greens say WA needs to follow the example set by Rockingham on climate change.

Greens spokesperson on planning, Lynn MacLaren MLC, said Rockingham’s showing the way and the rest of Western Australia can’t afford a piecemeal approach any longer.

“The City of Rockingham is well beyond debating what may be causing climate change,” Ms MacLaren said today. “They have studied the science and intend to be ready.

Environmental assessment needed for Perth Stadium and Sports Precinct at Burswood Peninsula

This is what the Burswood Peninsula looks like now. It is a far cry from its former uses as a rubbish tip, sewerage treatment works and industrial site.  The site has been rehabilitated into a public golf course (that attracts 80,000 golfers annually), lakes, birds, trees and parkland. But not for long – the State Government has other plans.

Today The Greens outlined a green transformation for Scarborough Beach Road including an the extension of light rail to connect Scarborough Beach with transport hubs at Stirling and Glendalough.

Life at Jervoise Bay and Woodman Point to Change in New Climate

Greens MLC Lynn MacLaren revealed today the impacts climate change is having on Cockburn, and called for state government action to relieve pressure on local council efforts to adapt to climate change.

“Modest predictions see the coastal facilities along Jervoise Bay and Woodman Point under water by 2100. In just the moderate projections released by Australian Department of Climate Change and Energy Efficiency, the spits, groynes and jetties that are currently used in this area in particular are going to disappear by 2100. This is based on a 0.8 metre rise in sea level.

“Unfortunately, there will also be a further increase in high tide, bringing inundation to areas 1.4 metres above current sea level.
