Wasteful plebiscite damaging for LGBTI Australians, Lynn MacLaren warns

Previous estimates of the cost of a marriage equality failed to account for the costs of major social damage, while wasting hundreds of millions of dollars of public funds, Greens spokesperson for sexuality and gender identity Lynn MacLaren has said.

“I’m not surprised by the figure outlined in the PricewaterhouseCoopers report, which suggests a plebiscite will cost $525 million in direct expenses, coping with mental health impacts and lost production,” Ms MacLaren said.

“The whole exercise is a complete waste of time and money, particularly as the Parliament has the power to change the law now.

“A plebiscite would achieve nothing and come at a great cost.

“It is non-binding and non-compulsory and we already know that 72 per cent of Australians support same sex marriage. Read more »

Principal receives a ‘fail’ in education and Christian values

I am shocked by WA Today’s article where a Principal has told a parent of the local Mandurah schoolgirl, that his daughter is not welcome at school because he is gay, Greens spokesperson for sexuality and gender identity Lynn MacLaren MLC says.

"This story is clearly upsetting for many people," Ms MacLaren said.

"Christians can be gay and gay people can be Christian. The actions of this Principal, if this report is accurate, are bigoted and judgemental.

“It is galling to me that state and federal funds are being used to prop up this school, where such prejudice and discrimination is being displayed.

“These parents may choose to send their child to another school that would provide better support and education for their daughter, but I worry about all of the other children at the school. Read more »

Being LGBTI is not a lifestyle choice

Greens MLC Lynn MacLaren MLC has dismissed Liberal MLA Peter Abetz’s criticism of a Commonwealth-funded anti-bullying program designed to protect young people who identify as LGBTI as hopelessly out of touch.

“Comments such as these can prolong and encourage bullying based on gender stereotypes,” Ms MacLaren said.

“Clearly, being  Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender/Transsexual and Intersex et cetera is not a lifestyle choice, or something that you ‘grow out of under the right influences’, but a fundamental aspect of personal identity. Read more »

WA Greens call for marriage equality allies to speak out

Greens MLC Lynn MacLaren called on marriage equality allies to speak out more vocally as she congratulated Rachelle and Hayley Bennett for their highly publicised marriage thanks to the British Consulate and local radio station Hit92.9.

Orchestrated by Radio Station Hit92.9’s Heidi Anderson, the wedding took advantage of a loophole in the system allowing the lesbian couple to get married if at least one partner held British citizenship.

Ms MacLaren said Rachelle and Hayley Bennett’s marriage, although unfortunately not recognised by Australia, really highlighted broad public support for marriage equality.

“It is truly inspiring to me to see that this couple’s wedding has encouraged more marriage equality allies to come out into the open,” she said. Read more »
