Greens move for Marriage Equality in WA

The Greens today advised the WA Parliament they will introduce a Marriage Equality Bill 2012.

The Bill will enable same-sex couples to marry in Western Australia. Like other Greens State Bills in Australia, it will authorise celebrants, establish a system of registration and provide for dissolution and annulment of same sex marriages.

“All eyes are on Canberra now, but our Bill stands ready in the wings so that Western Australians can enjoy marriage equality alongside residents in Tasmania and the other states who have already signalled their support for gay marriage,” Ms MacLaren said. Read more »

Greens call for a specific policy against homophobic bullying in schools

Today Hon Lynn MacLaren MLC, the Greens WA spokesperson on sexuality, used non-government time in Parliament to call on the Minister for Education to introduce a specific policy against homophobic bullying in schools.

Ms MacLaren cited recent research which shows that specific policies are working in other states to reduce homophobia in schools.

“Discrimination, violence and bullying on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity is alarmingly common in our schools,” said Ms MacLaren. Read more »

Queensland TV ad should be taken off the air

Lynn MacLaren MLC would like Bob Katter's homophobic ad taken off air.

"Freedom of speech does not extend to hate-mongering. The style of the ad, with the pixelated torsos, implies illegality and wrongdoing."

"I support the Greens candidate for Mt Coot-tha Queensland in his call for Katter’s Australia Party ad to be withdrawn." Read more »
