Sunday Trading - Effect on Business

On 30 November 2012, the last sitting day of the year, Lynn asked the Minister for Commerce a question about Sunday Trading: whether the small business sector is celebrating or whether the only real winners are WA’s big businesses.

Sadly, the Minister did not answer the question.  He spruiked Sunday Trading at some length, pointing to an increase in the overall throughput in shopping centres of between 7% and 9% in the first 3 months, and that the overall size of the retail spending pie has increased from between 3 – 6%.

Greens Bid for Truth in Free-Range Egg Labelling

A bill to provide certainty for shoppers who want to choose free-range eggs was introduced Tuesday by Greens MLC Lynn MacLaren.

“Under our bill, the term free-range may only be used when an egg is produced under the conditions of the Western Australian Code of Practice for Poultry, with no more than 1500 hens per hectare,” said Ms MacLaren, the Greens spokesperson on animal welfare.

2011 GWN7 West Australian Regional Small Business Awards Winners Announced

The winners of the GWN7 Western Australian Regional Small Business Awards for 2011, and the inductee to the WA Regional Small Business Hall of Fame, were announced tonight. Small Business Minister Simon O’Brien presented the major prize, the ‘2011 Regional Small Business of the Year Award’ to Charles and Lee Reynolds of Florescence, Albany, before an audience of more than 260 guests.

“This year we saw two winners from the Kimberley region; two from the Pilbara; and one each from the Great Southern, South-West and Goldfields-Esperance regions,” Mr O’Brien said. “The nominated and successful businesses are the ‘best of the best’ small and medium-sized businesses in regional WA and are a great example of the creativity and innovation of the small business sector in this State. “Representing a wide range of industries, they should be very proud of their achievements.” Read more »

Foster's sale: another reason to support small Australian brewers

The Australian Greens will work to ensure the historic Cascade brewery remains in South Hobart, generating jobs for Tasmanians, and continue to press for reforms to the tax treatment of microbreweries, in the wake of today's announcement that Foster's will be sold to an Anglo-South African company.
