Social isolation a cruel ‘companion’ for those with a psychotic illness

Australian Greens spokesperson for Mental Health, Senator Penny Wright, has highlighted the challenges faced by people living with a psychotic illness during a speech in the Senate last night.

“Every year, about one in 200 people experience psychotic illness,” Senator Wright said.

“Late last year, the most comprehensive study of its kind ever undertaken in Australia identified social isolation as the cruellest aspect of life faced by many people living with a psychotic illness.

“Nearly a quarter of those in the study reported feeling socially isolated and lonely.

Oxford Foyer a great model for future social projects: Greens

The WA Greens have praised the innovative concept and design of the Oxford Foyer, saying it highlights what can be achieved when government agencies and charities work together to address issues such as youth homelessness.

St Patrick’s Community Support Centre in Fremantle is proud to announce that the Starlight Hotel Choir has produced its first CD, 'Shelter Me'.

The Red Cross and the Coolgardie community achieve parenting gold

Sounds of laughter and cheering were heard around town as more than 150 people joined in the Red Cross community picnic and family fun day in the Goldfields’ town of Coolgardie. Around half of the Aboriginal population of the area joined in the fun – the culmination of a 12 week early childhood support programme run by the Red Cross.

Boom turns to bust as 55,000 wait for public housing in WA

Soaring housing and living costs in Western Australia are pushing record numbers of people onto the public housing waitlist, despite the state being home to more millionaires per capita than almost anywhere else on the planet.

“55,000 is a worrying number, especially when you consider that the combined state and federal programs have only locked in an extra 4,600 new public dwellings over 4 years up until 2011,” said MLC Lynn MacLaren, Greens WA spokesperson for Housing.

Carers Week 17 -23 October 2010

Almost 2.6 million Australians provide care for family members or friends with a disability, mental illness, chronic condition or who are frail aged.

Carers contribute $30.5 billion dollars worth of care each year.  Australia’s health system could not survive without the contribution of carers.

Carers Week is a national awareness week held during October each year in Australia.
