Greens Fight Marina Development: Point Peron is Too Precious To Lose

Greens MLC Lynn MacLaren and Senator for Western Australia Scott Ludlam, in response to today’s conditional approval for a marina at Point Peron, said “The Greens will work together at a State and Federal level to protect Point Peron because it is too precious to lose.”

“A canal estate in this location is a mistake that we will pay for now and long into the future,” the South Metro MLC said.

Greens Prompt Action by Barnett on Biodiversity

The Greens initiative to improve biodiversity protection laws has been taken up by the Barnett Government.

At the opening of Parliament on 11 April, His Excellency the Governor, Malcolm McCusker, announced that the Government will introduce a new Biodiversity Conservation Act to replace the existing 63 year old conservation legislation. The Greens, who tried to put draft laws to Parliament twice before, are determined to scrutinise the Government’s alternative to see if it stands the test of protecting key urban bushland habitats.

Kwinana Air Buffer Zone Extension: Mandogalup

When quiet home-life is affected by encroaching industry, it can be hard to know what to do. That’s why residents in Mandogalup and Munster have separately petitioned parliament to look into planning rules for industry buffers.

The first petition was signed by 434 residents in the Mandogalup area, opposing the extension of the Kwinana Industry Area Buffer Zone (known as the Kwinana Air Quality Buffer Zone or KAQB) to 1500 metres from the Alcoa slurry ponds. Read more »

Free Kick’s a Foul on Sport Stadium

The Greens say the news of James Packer’s $35 million discount is the last straw when added to the lack of genuine public consultation and the sidelining of environmental assessment of the pollution risk of development at the Burswood Park golf course to Swan River water quality.

“How much more will this Premier gift to his special friends at the expense of public amenity and risk to our river’s health?” Greens spokesperson on planning, Lynn MacLaren MLC queried.
