High Street upgrade option insults community

The WA Greens Transport Spokesperson, Hon Lynn MacLaren MLC has branded the WA Government’s decision to pursue its preferred Option 4 for the upgrade of the High Street and Stirling Highway intersection an expensive insult to the local community.

“This makes a mockery of the entire community consultation process. The community were consulted and came back with a clear resounding ‘no’ to Option 4 because it will destroy peoples’ homes, a community garden and 3 holes of a public golf course and increase the number of trucks on our roads,” said Ms MacLaren. WA Greens MPs support Malaysian community in fight against toxic waste from WA mining company

Greens MPs Robin Chapple, Lynn MacLaren and Senator Scott Ludlam will meet with Malaysian community leaders from Kuantan, concerned about hazardous waste from Australian rare earths processing.

Australian company Lynas mines rare earths and will export these to Malaysia for processing, creating hazardous waste. The rare earths ore contains thorium, which emits alpha particles.

Hon Lynn MacLaren, the WA Greens transport spokesperson said "Even with layers of EPA approvals and subsequent Ministerial conditions, the community was exposed to lead dust in Esperance and Magellan struggled to guarantee safety until they eventually packed up." Read more »

Offer Wi-Fi for Perth buses and trains

The Australian Greens have called for free Wi-Fi internet connection on public transport in Perth to encourage more people to leave their cars at home.

Greens Federal transport spokesperson Senator Scott Ludlam said free wi fi would make public transport more practical and more attractive for people travelling to and from work. Read more »
