The Greens (WA) believe that:

  • freedom of gender identity is a fundamental human right
  • acceptance and celebration of people of diverse gender identities are essential for genuine social justice and equality
  • people have the right to assume their self-identified gender and this is integral to people‚Äôs lived experiences as citizens and members of the community

The Greens (WA) want:

  • the repeal of all federal and state laws that are discriminatory on the grounds of gender identity
  • marriage equality regardless of gender identity
  • access to the full range of medical and health services required by people with needs related to their gender identity (see also The Greens (WA) Health policy)

The Greens (WA) promote and support government and community actions that:

  • educate for understanding and acceptance and provide, within the education system, age-appropriate information about the diversity of gender identity (see also The Greens (WA) Education policy)
  • provide community awareness programs that lead to a greater understanding of the diversity of gender identities
  • provide accurate information, appropriate referrals and counselling for individuals, parents and carers of young people, in relation to diverse gender issues
  • provide adequate funding for services to support and protect people of diverse gender, in particular suicide prevention, peer support, coming out, counselling, health and housing programs.
  • establish an information service along the lines of the Gender Centre model to refer trans1 and intersex people to appropriate services
  • recognise that gender diversity should not be a factor in adoption, fostering, child custody rulings or access to artificial insemination, sperm donation and in vitro fertilisation programs
  • make refuges safe for people of diverse gender and oppose discrimination against trans women in accessing women's refuges (see also The Greens (WA) Women policy)
  • improve and broaden the police, health services' and prison services' knowledge of and sensitivity towards diverse gender issues and further develop liaison between these services and trans people (see also The Greens (WA) Justice policy)
  • ensure that intersex and trans people, without undertaking surgeries, are able to alter their sex on all official documents, consistent with how they live and identify, and irrespective of their marital status
  • ensure permanent medical intervention of a cosmetic nature for people born with an intersex condition is made only when they are able to make the decision for themselves
  • ensure that governments and their agencies consult with communities and representative groups of diverse gender on the development of policies and programs that affect them
  • remove all exceptions in the Equal Opportunity Act that permit discrimination against people on the basis of their chosen gender identity
