Greens MLC Lynn MacLaren welcomed the news of a high court challenge and wished farmer Steve Marsh well, saying Justice McClure found in his favour in the Court of Appeal.
The Greens have long supported the right of farmers to grow their crops without the threat of contamination by GM varieties, and accordingly the Greens support Steve Marsh’s application for leave to appeal to the High Court.
“We have long held that more protection is required for farmers, not less,” Greens MLC Lynn MacLaren said.
“The State Government’s position on GM crop farming does nothing to provide certainty to organic or GM-free farmers, whose livelihoods continue to be threatened by the spread of GM canola.
“The Court of Appeal’s split decision in this case shows that even the highest legal minds in the land cannot agree on the rights of organic farmers.
“GM canola crops, and those tainted with GM, fetch a lower price per tonne on world markets.
“Our farmers who want to retain their clean, green farming reputation, and the premium price it demands, deserve our support.”
