Greens MLC Lynn MacLaren says consumers’ ability to clearly identify and choose free range eggs has come a step closer with the release of the ACCC's guide to misleading claims in the free-range egg industry.
“Shonky practices and misleading labelling are rife in the egg marketing industry where it is abundantly clear that voluntary management has comprehensively failed,” Ms MacLaren said.
“The ACCC’s guide is welcome, but it merely confirms what we already know – that rogue operators in the industry are failing to clean up their act.
“Only specific labelling legislation will provide the clarity and transparency needed to provide consumers with the confidence that their dollars will support ethical farming.
“I first introduced a bill to protect the free range label in Western Australia in 2012.
“A national push for truthful labelling, including campaigns by HSI, Choice, Animals Australia and the RSPCA, alongside legal challenges by the ACCC to prominent producers, are continuing to build pressure for better laws and regulations.
“My Free Range Eggs Labelling Bill 2013 will establish clear, enforceable WA laws outlining the conditions producers must meet to use the ‘free range’ label.
"People care about the conditions for hens at egg farms which is why they choose free range.
“For too long they have been duped by intensive producers who have misused the free range label."
